The Dawson Catchment
The Dawson Catchment is a sub-catchment within the Fitzroy Basin and Capricornia region, encompassing various local government areas (LGAs), including Banana Shire, Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council, and parts of Central Highlands, Western Downs, and Maranoa Regional Councils.
It covers a total land area of 50,687 km2, representing over a quarter of Victoria.
The region experiences a subtropical climate characterised by moist and warm summers and dry winters.
The average annual rainfall is 704 mm (QGSO, 2021). Notably, the Dawson Catchment is prone to frequent extreme weather events such as major and minor floods, storm surges, tropical lows, cyclones, bushfires, heatwaves, and droughts (BoM, 2018).
